Interesting TimesTerry Pratchett: Interesting Times (A discworld novel)

Interesting Time is a fantasy, an installment of Terry Pratchett's famed 'Discworld's series. Pratchett is easily the genre's best satirist, creating a magnificant world that he describes as a flat, circular planet that rests on the back of four elephants, which in turn are standing on the back of a giant space travelling turtle.
This particular novel can be read as a stand-alone and with only the loss of missing a few references made in past novels. Pratchett centres his story arcs among a wide assortment of colorful, original characters, and in Interesting Times he returns us to a story of one of his best creations, Rincewind, possibly the worst wizard to ever live. This novel, like all the other installments in the series is full of unequaled word play, witty humor, and tremendous allegorical examples.

A Long Way DownNick Hornby: A Long Way Down

A dark comedy, playing off the themes of suicide, angst, depression and promiscuity.
The story is written in the first-person narrative from the points of view of the four main characters, Martin, Maureen, Jess and JJ. These four strangers happen to meet on the roof of a high building called Topper's House in London on New Year's Eve, each with the intent of committing suicide. Their plans for death in solitude, however, are ruined when they meet. The novel recounts their misadventures as they decide to come down from the roof alive - however temporarily that may be.

The Jane Austen Book ClubKaren Joy Fowler: The Jane Austen Book Club

The Jane Austen Book Club, as the title suggests, centers around six members of a book club that discusses Jane Austen's novels. The book has six chapters, with each chapter having a different member of the group leading the discussion about one of Jane Austen's six novels (plot synopses of her novels are provided at the back of this book). The novels aren't as important as the book group, five women and one man, who all bring a different perspective to the group. As their own stories and interactions unravel, Karen Joy Fowler's novel illuminates the power and effect books have on all of our lives. The Jane Austen Book Club has received many glowing reviews with the New York Times saying, "On its surface,  the novel is a tidy number, a perfectly cut and polished little gem with just enough facets. But that's not the half of it. This exquisite novel is bigger and more ambitious than it appears. It's that rare book that reminds us what reading is all about."

Alexander McCall Smith: The Sunday Philosophy Club

images/konyvajanlo/08aprilis/philosophy_club.jpgIn his new mystery series, Alexander McCall Smith has moved a long way from his comfort zone --- nearly 6,000 miles in fact, a number that represents the distance from Gaborone, Botswana to Edinburgh, Scotland. Botswana, as many readers surely know, is the setting for Smith's immensely popular No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series while Edinburgh is home to Smith's latest undertaking, THE SUNDAY PHILOSOPHY CLUB, billed as an "Isabel Dalhousie mystery."
Isabel Dalhousie, a quiet woman of independent means and a certain age, seems an unlikely gumshoe. As the editor of The Review of Applied Ethics, Isabel would seem more at home in a university philosophy department than dealing with the sordid details of murder most foul. But we, as Isabel would certainly agree, do not always choose our circumstances; at times they choose us.
In Isabel's case, circumstances cause her to witness an unfortunate death, a young man's fall from a symphony hall balcony. "Her first thought, curiously, was of Auden's poem on the fall of Icarus. Such events, said Auden, occur against a background of people going about their ordinary business. They do not look up and see the boy falling from the sky. I was talking to a friend, she thought. I was talking to a friend and the boy fell out of the sky." Isabel decides she has a moral duty to investigate the circumstances of the young man's death, being as she would have been the last person he saw before his death.

Alexander McCall Smith: In the Company of Cheerful Ladies

images/konyvajanlo/08aprilis/cheerful_ladies.jpgPrecious Ramotswe, that cheerful Botswanan private investigator of 'traditional build', is now married to Mr J.L.B. Matekoni of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. The Agency is busy, but Mma Ramotswe cannot ignore the plea which is made by a woman who comes to her with a tale of particular misfortune. Unfortunately, her attempts to help are interrupted by a close encounter between her tiny white van and a bicycle, and by a spectacular disagreement between her assistant, Mma Makutsi, and one of the apprentices at the garage. This apprentice has found a fancy girlfriend who drives a Mercedes-Benz. How can he be rescued from his folly? And as for Mma Makutsi, she has found a dancing class, and a man who may not be able to dance very well, but who admires her greatly. And all of this happens against a background of quiet sessions of bush tea, and of a land that stretches out forever under mile upon mile of empty sky. . .

Alexander McCall Smith: Tears of the Giraffe

images/konyvajanlo/08aprilis/tearsofgiraffe.jpgThe second book in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series
Following on from the brilliant The No.1 Ladies' Detective agency Tears of the Giraffe charts the further adventures of Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only - and finest - female private detective.
It's going to take all her intuition and eminent sensibility for Precious to crack her hardest case yet: the decade-old disappearance of an American on the edge of the Kalahari. And if that wasn't enough, there are plenty of matters closer to home to concern her: her highly talented secretary, Mma Makutsi, eager to be promoted to detective; the unscrupulous maid of her husband-to-be, the wonderful Mr J.L.B. Matekoni; and the sudden - and unexpected - increase in her family by not one, but two.
